Hi,

I'm a Nikon shooter helping a local business with some fashion photography. They have splashed out on a rather lovely 6Dmk2 and what i found a fairly decent kit lens in the 24-105 f3.5-f5.6

They've asked me to recommend a decent lens for outdoor shoots where they can achieve sharp results with a soft bokeh

Canon glass is not an area i've any knowledge in so could anyone recommend a lens that would do the trick and supplement the 6Dmk2 ? I'd imagine budget would be £1K but probably happy to pick up a good 2nd hand

This is the sort of images they are taking at the moment. Any advice much appreciated.

If they are looking for a zoom rather than a couple of prime lenses then maybe have a look at the 24-70 f/2.8 L Mk II? If buying used (to keep within budget) make sure they get the Mk II version as the older Mk 1 should be quite a bit cheaper and it's easy to mistake an expensive Mk1 for a cheap MkII when looking at a sea of listings!

However, with a top speed of 1/4000 sec rather than 1/8000 sec on the 6D II they might need a suitable ND filter occasionally to cope with sunny conditions whilst getting the required bokeh?

Thanks for that - that sounds a great option. The only thought i had was a fast prime around the 100mm length but obviously lose the flexibility of the 24-70

I've not got the 24-70 f/2.8 L myself but it seems to be very well thought of (mind you, it should be at that price!). Perhaps see if any of the pro photographers on here have any other suggestions before buying something though? (y)

As for focal length, perhaps have a look at the file data and see what focal length you (and/or they) are using for most of their photos (assuming that's the sort of framing they actually want/need). Would that be covered by a 24-70 or do you need something else?

If looking for something a bit more 'portraity' then maybe give this review on 85mm primes a watch... it's by Kai (ex of Digital Rev) so it may not be suitable for viewing/listening to in the workplace/polite company?!

That particular 24-105mm is a non-L lens. The L version is brilliant, but it's "only F4".
For fashion, they've be much better served by the 24-70 f2.8 L Mk2 (or even a Mk1 if budget is an issue). Or they could go for a Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 or the new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2.
Focal length for fashion can be very subjective, some like to go wide at 35mm some like the compression at 70mm or more. A 24-70 will give a great all rounder.

Just bear in mind any FF Eos lens will fit and work on a 6d (1 or 2), avoid ef-s as they wont work (or even fit), other than there's not much to trip you up buying an EF fit lens.
Some might also consider 70/200 F4 IS L, very sharp lens from wide open, the non IS isnt quite as sharp.
Just depends really on what you want to fill the frame with and where you'll be standing relative to the model, as it would if you were shooting a Nikon.

For that budget S/h you can pick up a 135f2L along with a 24-105L

I’ve never used the 24-105 but the 135 is one of my most used lenses. I know many see it as ‘too long’ but I love it.

In film days i.e. FF 35mm equivalent 135 was the goto length for portrait/full length shots, hence my suggestion to look at 70/200

Thanks Guys - some great options. Had a look around and have to say i was very impressed with the 135 F2 USM, such a killer bokeh !

OK the fixed length renders it limited indoors but outside could be very useful

Might start with that option and get them to upgrade their mid zoom glass later.
