Hi all, looking at getting a 60D to replace my 1100D in the near future.

I want a 70-200 f4 for definite, am looking at the 15-85mm as my general purpose lens, has any used it before? Gets a decent enough write up on dpreview.

Not sure what the other alternatives are, 17-55mm is way out of my price range

Any thoughts?

Have a look at the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 EX DC OS HSM. Fantastic lens, very good value. I upgraded my Canon 17-85 for this a year back on my 40D as i couldn't afford the Canon 17-55 f2.8 which i really fancied, and its been such a step up and I'm so glad I got it. Worth a look. Cheers G.

+1 for the 15-85 it's a great walkabout lens to have on your camera at a fairly reasonable price. I've yet to read a really bad review.

I used the Sigma 50mm 1.4 on my 60D almost exclusively. It's a fantastic lens, and the 12-24 was nice on the 60D too (not so much on the 5dmk3 until stopped down), and other than that I used the 70-200 F4L and the Sigma 105. All of them are great lenses on that camera.

15-85 is a fine choice on a crop body.

The focal range is fantastic. The extra couple of mm at the wide end do make a difference compared to those starting at 17 or 18mm

The 17-55 is also a fantastic lens though.

I guess it boils down to what you're shooting and ultimately how much you value that f2.8 aperture.

Cheers all, shall have a read up on the Sigma & Tamron lenses.

I would like the 17-55mm but its an extra £250 or so which would give me room to play with and look at a Sigma 10-20mm or a Canon 50mm 1.4

Pretty much the same as you with lenses, half way there with the 70-200 f4 and what a brilliant lens, just the 15-85 to go so can't comment on that but I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 70-200

If I was starting over with a crop I would do it exactly how I did the first time. I saved a little longer to be able to buy the 17-55 and was so happy I did. That was an awesome walk around/all purpose lens. I used it for everything from general use to landscapes. I paid 850$ u.s. dollars for it and sold it a year later (went full frame) for 800 with no problem at all. It was like I rented it for a year for 50 bucks. A good lens will hold its value so you don't loose much when selling it. Just my opinion but I would suggest holding out a bit longer for the 17-55, you want be sorry.

Decided to buy the 60D with 15-85 & 70-200 f4 from Digital Rev for £1348. I have got the cash to get the 17-55 but not sure I actually need to spend the extra at the moment

You won't be disappointed, the 70-200 is a belter of a lens, the 15-85 gets a good review and following on here and certainly worth it - enjoy your new purchase when it arrives and looking forward to seeing some of your shots / review of your equipment...
