I have a 40D and the Canon 100-400 im looking for a second lens i have got a preference only Wildlife but i feel i really need another lens as trying to take shots of the Grand kids with a 100-400 is not on cheers:)

Canon 17-55mm would be very nice if you haven't got anything in that range

I think the 24/105L would be ideal if F4 is fast enough for you. It's a very popular walk about lens and gets fantastic reviews for IQ!

I'd say the 24-105, 28-105 or 28-135, if you're not worried about the wide end. The wide end of these lenses are roughly as wide as most compacts will go, btw.

24-105mm, it offers continuity alongside your 100-400mm and is a great lens to use.

It's actually the other way around for me, I have a 24-105mm and am looking for a 100-400mm. Not having much success at finding one though.

I origionaly had a 10-22efs, a 24-105L, and a 100-400L which covered all my needs.

It was the perfect lineup for my 40D, since updating to a 5d2 I sold the 10-22 and replaced it with a 17-40L.

I'd say my 24-105L is my most used lens on both the 40D or 5D2 body depending what I want to photograph.

How about a nice Prime? I have just got a 50mm 1.4 for taking pictures of the kids.

I had a nifty-fifty a little while back and took some of my most cherished pictures of the kids using it. The fixed focal length makes you think a bit more about what you are taking and the wide aperture is handy in low light if you are looking to avoid using the flash.

30mm and 50mm seem to be popular "portrait" lenses on the crop bodies like the 40D.

The 50mm 1.8 is cheap as chips but may give you an idea if you get on with the idea of a prime lens. You will lose buttons if you sell it on and you have a few upgrade options....

85 f/1.8? Gives you a nice working distance, but still a lot smaller than the 100-400, and you get a wider aperture than the zooms.

The Canon 15-85 is an excellent walkround lens and covers the range you are missing, IQ is superb as well

Thank you everybody i think the 24-105 fits the bill for me, the 15-85 maybe a bit wide for me cheers:)

I use the 15-85 as a walkabout. The wide angle is really useful and means that you won't generally need an UWA.

The occasional landscape, architecture shot etc, or ever the group shot of the family when your all squeezed into 1 room :)

It is sharp as hell as well...
