Hello all. I have an older 60D that I use. My daughter just started cheer comps and I'm looking for a lens that will do good with the 60d for those. Majority of the time they are fairly dark except stage lighting. Standing sometimes right at the edge of the stage/mat to 20-30ft away from the stage. We could be anywhere from the size of a college basketball arena to our local cheer gym. Open to not only lens suggestion but tips from anyone that's shot dance comps or low light concerts/comps. I've not had much experience shooting fast moving subjects but now is a great time to learn. As far as shooting modes, Are you all shooting in full manual mode, Av mode, or Tv mode?

Was thinking of a few lenses.. 70-200 2.8, 135mm 1.8

Depends on your budget I suppose. A 70-200mm f2.8 may be a bit long on a crop unless you are only shooting your daughter not the group and your daughter. What about a Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 That would be roughly 75-150mm so great for shots of individuals from around 7m to 15m in landscape mode. I'd want something wider though especially if you can get close

Do you have any experience with that lens? I was reading about that lens and some others had said the auto focus on it is slow and unreliable.

I have shot dance competitions at many places including Blackpool tower ballroom, gymnastics in sports halls, no flash is a given some events have great lighting set ups others nothing, Its all about your access, if you can get mat side or front of stage great but if you are in the seats then you are going to be a bit far away especially if your not on the front row and ideally you want to be shooting from a low down position. If concentrating on individual photos then the king is 70-200 f/2.8 give you that extra stop of light that allows you to keep the ISO down or the shutter speed up if you are wating to get the whole group in then you will want something wider possibly the 16-35 if you are up-close but you could always move back a little and use the 70-200 if you can get far enough back or a 24-70. i generally had mat/stage access but i would have 2 cameras one with a longer lens the other with a shorter lens that would be any combination of the 3 mentioned above.
