Hello everyone,

I currently shoot basketball and football.

Camera body wise I have a canon 7d Mark ii and 5d Mark iii. I want to buy a canon 1dx but I'm not sure which one to replace. I like the FPS on the 7d Mark ii and the crop sensor coupled with my 70-200mm lens but i much prefer the images from my 5d Mark iii due to the noise capability but the FPS is obviously on the slow side. What would u do?

I can't afford two canon 1dx's but I can afford one canon 1dx second hand if I part exchange it with either bodies stated as above.

I would lose the 7dmkII in a heartbeat and keep the 5dmkII and i will tell you why.... because in your summary as part of your question you say "but i much prefer the images from my 5d Mark iii" --

The one problem you will have.. the 1dx is so superior to either of those.. you will be using it all the time and eventualy start to hate which ever camera you keep... trust me you will :)

Thanks Kipax. yes for the price it costs it will definitely be my work horse. I was thinking of mounting my 400 on the 1dx and the 70-200mm on the 5d3 when shooting football. I thought I would miss the crop sensor but I can crop pretty well and not regret when using the 5d3.
For basketball I will just couple 70-200mm with 1dx and it should work fine.

Besides I like taking my 5d3 on holiday too lol I would miss it if I sold it

The money shots at football are usually done with the 70-200.. IMHO ......plus you ahve more time with the 400 as things move slower.. well they dont but it seems that way because of the focul lenght.. where the 70-200 you dont have a lot of time to think.. things can happen fast in the penalty area.. so I would have 1dx on 70-200

Good point. Make sense coz I have my 7d2 with my 70-200mm at the moment and 5d3 with my 400mm. So yeah good thinking Kipax. I will let you know when I finally get it. Still saving up my pennies and keeping my fingers crossed for the 1dx2 to come out but I know it will take forever for the price to drop for 1dx when canon do decided to bring out the 1dx2

I ahve been looking at the possible 1dx2 and theres nothign interesting enough for me..keep the 1dx :)

Yeah I know what you mean. I can't imagine many people will be giving up the 1dx for the second model. I know a few photographers who are still happy using the 1d Mark IV.

Once you have a 1D-X (and not as a form of kit snobbery) you'll not really want to use the others again as a preference. You say you take the 5d on holidays? I take the 1D-X on holidays. You will too. Of the two options - I agree I'd lose the 7d and keep the 5d until I could afford another 1d :)

Lol @cymruchris you are trying to make me bankrupt...2 1dx's lol....Maybe in the next 5 years....but yes I will definitely take yours and Kipax advice on board and ditch the 7d2.

I keep checking second hand shops online for a good 1dx price lol.

Thank you

What kind of prices have you been seeing so far? And don't do what I did - and throw one in a pond.

Camera world -£3500
EBay is on auction at the moment starting at like £2k
Wex photographic is £3099
Apeture photographic has just sold their camera
Ffordes is £3289
Mpb photographic is £3249
Harrison's cameras is £3k
Mifsuds is £3399

I just bought one for the equivalent of £2100 :) with 19k on the shutter... Just interested in making a comparison. There's another one over here for the same price give or take £50 but it has a bit of wear around the camera strap eyelets.... All boxed with the bits... Quite a difference..

haha you should see the state of mine.. ones had over 700 thousand clicks and looks like its been through a barttlefield :)

Id snap that up tomorrow for that price, can't find one for under 3k.

Show us a photo of the battlefield one :) I'd be interested to see what a 700k body looks like...

but yes I will definitely take yours and Kipax advice on board and ditch the 7d2.

I went the other way and ditched the 5D3 and got the 7DII, I think it complements the 1DX superbly. Usual way of working for me is long lens on the 7D, shorter lens on the 1D, take advantage of the crop sensor.

I'd go with the 1Dx and the 70-200 as that will be as Kipax says your money shots - well a much higher percentage anyway.

And maybe, when the 1DX 2 hits the stands, the mark 1 will be noticeably cheaper. A top sports guy on here said to me at a match just before Christmas that he might not bother with upgrading his cameras this time around he is so happy with it...

The 1Dx 2 could be a year away

Good man.

It's my Equality and diversity training taking over.

Got my brand new 1DX for £2999 from DR just before christmas. Amazing camera but will require plenty sensor cleaning.

Why so much sensor cleaning?

Why so much sensor cleaning?

Mine needs a lot of cleaning, high FPS and full frame, just attracts dust. No too bad for sports but come motorsport season and panning shots that end up with >f11 it gets annoying.

Oh I see
