Yes
Maybe a stupid question but do lenses require servicing or recalibrating? I have an non DG Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 and I see all sorts of internet comments regarding af performance and accuracy etc and I wondered if it was worth having Sigma service and recalibrate? Is this possible? Or should I just buy the new OS version

I think your question is a bit too vague to be honest.
Do you believe you have a particular problem with your specific lens?
If so, could you identify what you believe it is.
Better yet, put up a decent size image with a description of what you believe you can see wrong.

Fair enough. It was a general question regarding lens servicing primarily, is this accepted practice? Do people have their lenses serviced after a period of time?

With my 120-300 as it is an early version I wondered if it would benefit from going back to Sigma to make sure everything is as it should be with the lens? I have no specific problem I would just like to know that it is working in tip top condition.

Comment regarding the OS version was rather flippant but I am wondering if this latest version has improved AF and IQ? Just got an itchy credit card

If you do want to get it serviced/calibrated then make sure you drop the camera off aswell. Calibration of a lens is best done to match the body you're using it on.

Lenses don't need servicing as a matter of course, unless you're hard working professional. Most enthusuasts use their gear very lightly and don't bash it about on a daily basis, knock things out of alignment or wear out components.

If you have no particular reason to supsect anything's wrong, then leave it alone. However, the new 120-300 OS is a very different prospect altogether  It is completely different optically, much better, and appears to be something of a bargain too. An an orderly queue is already forming to buy even before they arrive in the shops. Google reviews, 'micloi' on here has one - search his posts.

I was just a thought as it was an early 120-300 as to whether it would benefit from a tweak, bit like a engine blueprint :D

I am really torn between a second-hand Canon 300 f2.8 IS or this new 120-300 OS as they will be in the same ballpark. Well with the Canon still between £500-1000 more depending on age

off the top of my head the standard sigma service tariff for the 120-300 is about £160. and youll need the maximum special delivery service to cover the weight and insurance cost which is £25 or so.

but as said, if there isnt anything wrong then id save your money. my non DG 120-300 has only been back to repair drop damage by the previous owner, otherwise its built like a tank.

Yes I have just had a look and it is £166 plus the courier service. As I say it was just a thought as I wanted to check that my gear was all working in tip top condition before I go to Russia later in the year.
