Hello,

I'm planning to sell my Canon 18-200 (this is my holiday lens ) and get myself a good L potrait lens.Any suggestions or recommendations?

I'm might also go for 5D2 sometime this year so need a better glass to go with it as well.

Budget: around £600 mark.

I have the below gear:

Canon 500D/Canon 50mm 1.4/Canon 70-200 F4 IS L / Canon 18-200mm

Cheers

there not much choices for portrait L glasses around 600
popular choices are 24-105 f4, the old lens 28-70 2.8, some people will go for 100L, 135L, 200L

If I were you....I will add a little more budget for a 24-70mm 2.8!! Not sure if Canon is going to announce a mark 2 of it....but the version now is so great that no other lens can replace it!!!

You already have 2 perfect lenses to cover all portraits. They are 70-200mm and 50mm for an odd wider shot. If you want wideangle just get 17-40L or 24-105mm - but they are not so much for portraits, but general events coverage and landscape.

24-105 F4 will be an overlap in my gear however, I'm struggling between 17-40L and 24-70L.How is the IQ of 17-40 as compared to 24-70?Since I will go for 5D2 sometime in near future 17-40 does give me a good wide angle coverage on it and fits the bill as well. Will the saving for 24-70L be worth it?:)

Any advise friends?

Cheers

Just buy Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 now, sell when you get 5D and buy an improved 24-70|105 II or 16-35 III when they are out. Standard and wide zooms are overdue of a very needed update.
