I have a Tokina 12-24 which got dropped and damaged the ring that you push/pull to alternate between manual and auto focus. I put the lens into a repair place and when I got it back and put it on my 40D an error message came up ERR1 about the contact between the lens and the body. I took the lens off and put it back on and it worked fine for about an hour, switched the camera off and when I turned it back on the same error message reappeared.

I sent the lens back to be repaired and they are saying that they cannot find any fault with the lens and also not admitting responsibility that the fault has developed while they had the lens.

I do not intend paying anything for the repair should they agree it is faulty as I feel it happend while they had it and it had never had that fault in four years of use.

I'm not particularly confrontational and don't know what my legal position would be on this matter should they not agree to repair the lens for free or if they say that they cannot find any fault with the lens.

I have tried the lens on three different bodies and the same fault happened with each.

I know it sounds stupid but have you tried cleaning the lens contacts? Just a thought but it could (I doubt it) be something as simple as that

Did you send the lens in the post I take it? The first thing I would do is phone them and let them know the situation as soon as possible, the longer you leave it before making contact again the more deniability they have. See what they say and have a look at further action after that.

On a different note, one of the things ive seen suggested is running a 2B pencil across the lens contacts since this fills the minute amount of wear and conducts very well.

I hope you get things sorted, its no fun having broken kit.
