My Canon 50mm 1.8 has stopped auto focusing, It's hunting from end to end 95% of the time. I rang the shop where it came from and they said it was well out of warranty (which it was). Given that the 50mm was so cheap, I asked if it was worth repairing or scrapping. They reckoned a repair may be justifyable after all the price rises. I just have to send it off for investigation for a small fee.

So in general, how much does a repair cost????

A few years ago I had an accident, dropping a lens, it was OK but a bit stiff to zoom. Took it back to the shop for estimate and the repair cost was 120 notes. But, I protested it only cost 90 notes new. "I know" said the man in the shop "but its the labour charges".

Put my Nikon 17-55mm F2.8 in for testing and was told it needs to be recalibrated. I don't know how much work this involves nor if it's classed as a repair but it's costing £180. Fair enough it's an expensive lens but I'm wondering what kind of work is required with this?

A few months ago i sent my nikon 70-180mm lens of to fixation for a af switch problem, they replaced the spring and switch and serviced the lens. Cost inc of postage was only £114.

When I had my 24-70L repaired a couple years ago at fixation it cost about £550.

That was a new zoom assy., new focus assy., new mount, new front element and of course calibration and labour.

Wasn't too bad as I only bought it for £75 :D

I think the general consensus with the 50 1.8 is that if it's broken it's more economical just to buy a new one, it sucks but that's life.

A new 50mm f1.8 is £ 70 from Kerso

Thats what I was thinking.

I've found a few mk1 50mm 1.8s too! for a little over 100 quid

I was thinking about getting my Canon 24-85b repaired as the front is a touch loose when zoomed out.As it is not affecting the performance I might give it a miss

personally doesnt sound worth contemplating from a monetery view, perhaps stick it on fleabay and see how much it goes for

There are some Mk Is at over £130 - not sure its that much better than the MkII

I sent a sigma 17-35mm away for failed AF, cost about £45. Not sure who repaired it (sent via my local camera outlet), but i know it wasn't Sigma themselves.

Daft suggestion, but have you tried moving the MF/AF switch back and to a few times ??
