Hey, a few weeks ago my beloved 17-85 decided to "jump" out of my hands, and ended up on the floor. The lens itsself is fine, opticaly its still the same, however focusing has been somewhat effected. At 17mm its fine, but as soon as you zoom in a bit, it goes a bit wonkey. Close objects are fine, its just objects in the distance i have trouble with.

At 85mm i have no chance of focusing, therefore i have to use the manual ring to help focus. Now i have been debating is this the end for this lens, and should i try and sell it. If i try and sell it how much am i likley to get for it?

If i keep it and try and repair it, how much is this likely to cost?

ne one?

Hello, i would send it to a Canon Repair Centre. I seem to remember a post on here about a company in Elstree/Borehamwood area which was well regarded, willl have a look to see if i can find the post, regards Damian. :)

I had a similar problem with my EF 28-105 USMII, except the iris fell apart and the camera errored with it on :'(

After speaking with a tog chum of mine, I bought a new lens and the old one is in my "to sell on ebay" box of stuff - I've seen spare or repair customised lenses go for a few quid (£30 - £40)

seems such a waste to sell a lens for £30 or so.

seems a waste to drop it as well!

sorry to be so unhelpful ^. It might be uneconomical to be repaired in which case why not try and get as much money for the damaged lens as you can by selling it on ebay! :D

You can always get a quote, but you'll be looking to lay out at least £50 for that - although if you go ahead it's knocked off the bill.

Back to the tog chum - he has experience of 2 repaired lenses first hand. Twice he sold them on because they just did not feel like they use too - zoom not smooth in places and feeling overly tight too. Maybe others have better experiences???

My lens cost me £110 and the same to replace - would have been nice not to have happened but "stuff" happens.

na the excess will be around 100 and the premium will rise, i dont want to lay the burden on my folks when it was my fault. Ahh the joys of photography.

That's what stopped me claiming on house insurance. They do all that no-claims bit now so you end up paying back more than you claim.

Damn them - damn them all :bang:
