Hi All
I was due an upgrade as using a Sony alpha a330 but only a small, lens choice, so,switched out to a canon.

I purchased a body only , and a 55-250 is stm as a start . It's ok but doesn't have the range for bird photgraphy which is what interests me . It also is not wide enough for a kit lens for landscapes etc.

I was looking at the 18-135 for my everyday snapping lens but as a relative newbie was after opinions on best option. I am afraid any f2.8 or L glass suggestions will probably be beyond the budget at this time.

The other question I have is if a 2x converter on the 250 will be effective with light issues and af etc.

Regards
John

May help if you say what your budget is. No lens is a be all and end all so best decide what is your priority, wide angle or distance

As you already have the 55-250 the 18-135 is a bit pointless as you have a lot of overlap.
Look for something in the 17-50 range, there is quite a range to choose from and most seem pretty decent.
The 2* converter will not fit the lens you have and even if it did you would loose two stops and have rubbish IQ.
If you want a birding lens that is not going to cost a kidney look at some of the older sigmas in the 150-500 range ,other than that save up and get a Canon

Thanks guys.

I realise there is crossover , but will only be taking one lens out on family trips etc, however the tamron would solve the issue.

Thanks for the converter info i thought you could get a converter to fit.

Cheers
John

Canon 10-18mm STM for landscape, 18-55 STM for general buzzing about or just get the 18-55 STM and stitch images together to get the wide angle shots you want. Sigma do a good 17-50mm f2.8 with OS (Optical stabilization) which is very cheap for the quality of the lens. It's about £270 new. There is also the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 at £250 which is super sharp!

If you need longer then Tamron do a very good 70-300mm with VC (Vibration Control) for about £239.

Kenko do some pretty good converters too!! :)

I used to have the 28-135IS lens which I really liked and it worked very well for my needs and focal range I was after. I found the focal range was a nice compromise for me as a general walk about lens, especially if I didn't want to carry a couple of lenses about.

I've not used the 18-135 lens, but believe it's a good lens and seems to have a good following - certainly one to look at and if you can try out.

I have the 18-135 lens that I bought with my (old now) 550D. It is a good lens for what it is. I do a lot of hill walking and that's the lens that goes with me. The IS is good enough to get away without a tripod most of the time and the IQ is pretty good if you don't stop it down too far. It's a good compromise for covering anything I'm likely to see - landscape and wildlife. I have the 17-50 Tamron as a dedicated landscape lens which I'm well impressed with but wouldn't do me personally as a 'walkabout', and the Tamron 70-300 plus (the recent addition) Sigma 150-600 for wildlife.

Hi
Thanks both

Jannyfox , I walk as well and thought the 18-135 would be my best bet , can't carry a load of lens up a mountain. Would love a 600 mm lens but not in the budget this year.
