Hi I am new to this forum and just starting out with photography. I have a canon 1000d. I have heard loads about the 50mm 1.8 lens, what is the difference between using this and say 18mm-55mm lens at 50mm? Also what is a good lens to do macro work with, mainly flowers? Budget isnt that big. Many thanks Jc101

Aperture, aperture and aperture :)

The 18-55mm is a f3.5-5.6 aperture. That means that is is f3.5 at the wide end and f5.6 at 55mm so at 50mm it's going to be close to f5.6.

The 50mm is f1.8. That's a huge difference from f5.6!

The two main benefits are control of depth of field and the fact that the f1.8 lets in a heck of a lot more light, allowing you to shoot in much darker conditions.

50mm with a reversing ring or extension tubes? should do it for some decent macro work but I'm certainly not an expert at that. I'll leave that one to the bug experts :)

Hope that helps.

There are two differences.
First, the 50mm F1.8 is sharper - much sharper - than you 18-55mm

Secondly it is faster. By faster I mean it lets more light thought which in turn allows you to shoot at a faster shutter speed. Plus you get goo ddepth fo field control with that lens.

If you are considering a 50mm F1.8 you could always buy a couple of extension tubes and use it for macro too. Extension tubes allow you to focus closer than the lens would normally and cost under £100

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Hi, yeah i will shop round if it is a good lens, just used that to show lens I was looking at.

And get the book, try your library first:)

I have the 50mm F1.8 lens, it's superb in terms of sharpness but there's very little depth of field at F1.8, naturally. I seem to use it at F2.8 upwards.
