I am thinking of upgrading my zoom lens. I currently have the canon 100-400 version 1 lens and my shortlist is the following:
Canon 100-400 mark 2
Tamron 150-600
Sigma 150-600

Is the canon mark 2 worth paying the extra money for in terms of sharpness over the others. This will be used on a full frame camera to cover both wildlife and aircraft photography?

I've not used the Tamron / Sigma lenses, but have used the 100-400MKII and was very impressed with it, very quick to focus and lock on, very sharp and extremely quick to re-adjust focus.

Downside from your choice is you loosing 200mm length - is this important for you ?

I have read (I think) that the 100-400MKII will take the Canon 1.4TC...I'm sure someone will come along and confirm / deny this :)

Thanks for the reply, I have never had a lens with a focal length above 400 so i am not sure how much that will be used. I have read somewhere that on a full frame camera if you crop a picture to represent a longer focal length depending on the quality of the shorter lens, it can produce a sharper image than the longer focal length as standard. The main question is the quality of thwe canon lens worth the extra money it will cost to purchase, as the cost is more than double of the Tamron and at least £500 more than the sigma. Just interested in what other users of each lens has to say before I shell out the cash.
Cheers

Ive heard the tamron is very good, never used it myself though.

I think Gramps had the Tamron 150-600 (seem to remember looking at a photo taken with it???)

Could be worth giving him a nudge to see if he did and if so, what he thinks...

I've got the Tamron. Owner's thread here:

I'm happy with the image quality. Focussing on BIF is less than stellar in my experience- but that might also reflect some lack of skill on my part and some limitations in the AF of my 50D. I haven't really used the 300mm f4 since I got the Tamron.
If you don't need a zoom don't rule out the Canon 400mm 5.6, and personally I'd also consider a 2nd hand Sigma 500mm 4.5- particularly if I had a body that'd AF at f8.
