Hi guys,

Just wondered if you could give me some advise, i am going to New York next week and i am thinking of buying a new lens for my Canon 40D when i am out there.
I am a complete novice to photography but wanting to learn and just wondered if you could recommend any good lenses that would be suitable for New York and also a general lens when i am in the UK.

I have been thinking about the sigma 10-20mm only because i have seen this in a magazine and it got a good review, but would this be good other than architecture.

Hope you can help!

Cheers

Rich

Canon 15-85mm
Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

Those two if you are flush and want to stick with Canon. Sigma and Tamron have offerings as well if you want to save money. The 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is probably the best walkabout lens you can put on a crop camera like the 40D. Mine is never off my 1000D, but you pay for quality (£700+ quid). I started with the kit lens 18-55mm IS and it was a good lens for me until I upgraded.

You could always rent a lens for a trip, no point spending a lot of money on a lens to find out it doesn't suit your style.

Rich,

What kind of photography interests you? That will go a large way to helping people make sugguestions for lens for you.

Generally speaking you want a wide angle for architecture and landscape, like the Sigma 10-20 which gets generally good reviews.

The Canon equivalent is the EF-S 10-22 which is very good indeed, but more expensive.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Well i am training to be an architect at the moment, so buildings are generally a hot topic! Other than that it is generally landscape, motorshows and pictures of friends.

Unfortunately being a tight student i cannot afford much more than the £300 pound mark, but hopefully the US exchange rate will save and allow me a little more for my money!

The Canon 17-85mm sounds good. 17mm is quite wide and should be enough for you and the added bonus of the 85mm zoom makes it the perfect walkabout lens.

TBH I don't think 17mm is wide enough (you've presumably got an 18-55 kit lens?) and the 17-85 has a generous helping of distortion which will bow out the sides of buildings.

You can correct it in post processing and it is particularly easy with Canon's DPP if you shoot Raw. Check the demo on this link of the 17-85 in action http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_17-85_4-5p6_is_usm_c16/page3.asp

TBH all wide angles suffer from at least a little distortion, but some are (a lot) worse than others.

Can you get 17-40mm f/4L within your budget? It has far better colours than the cheapo 17-85, and will still be good for FF.

Otherwise consider Tokinas. They are far better than Canon consumer lenses or Sigmas.
