Guys,

When I get back to the UK on leave I'm buying a Canon 550D.
My query is, for bird photogrpahy, mostly in flight. What would be mybesy buy...

400mm 5.6 USM lens

or

300mm F/4 IS lens with 1.4x converter.

Also, would the 300mm with the 1.4x converter still be AF ???

Cheers for reading my post.

I bought the 400mm for the reason that I thought I would mostly be wanting the longer focal length and after a couple of years I think it was the right choise. The 1.4x converter would still be autofocus at f5.6 on the 300mm.

For BIF shots I would use the 300 F4 as it will be easier to track the bird in the first place and you will still have a 400mm f5.6 with the 1.4 converter fitted. And yes it will still auto focus with it fitted but not with a 2x converter.

Thanks guys,

That would have been my choice, but, I thought I'd ask instead of making a £900 duh duh.

Will put the rest of the money saved toward stuff for my telescope...

TO ME,

Nikon cracking cameras, but, VERY slow lenses.

in what way? Slow aperture - no, the range is similar to Canon's; both have wider aperture glass.
