hi all

can anyone recommend a filter type I should use to protect my lenses... there seems to be quite a few different types.... I like to try to capture low contrast images even in high contrast situations (and control the contrast in post production)

thanks in advance

steve

I use the UV ones for protection, if you do anything low-light it's worth taking it off to avoid reflections.

You don't REALLY need one, unless you tog on beaches, grit, mud etc.
A lens hood is best protection, only using a clear protector when needed. As above though, remove for night shots or when strong lights etc are being taken.

I use UV and Skylight filters to protect my lenses, always have done since I bought my first SLR over thirty years ago. However there are differences in opinion as always on their use. I have always believed that if I accidentally scratch my filter they are relatively cheap to replace as opposed to a lens. However fitting a filter is going to have an affect on the optical performance of the lens which may or may not be noticeable.
If you are in the habit of cleaning the glass of your lens with something like your shirt tail or handkerchief that's been in your pocket for days then get a filter.
