Hi, I have a canon 40d with an 18-200mm sigma lens. I currently spend a lot of time photographing 2 small mostly white dogs who are running around rather quickly. I use AF Servo and shutter priority set to about 1/1000 but the Sigma lens is not up to the job as it hunts and frequently locks focus in the wrong place. I am therefore wanting to upgrade the lens and also possibly the camera. I cannot decide between the Canon 70 - 300 IS or the Canon 70 - 200 L IS or Non IS. I also understand the the focusing system on the 7D body would be better than the one on the 40D would the 7D be a good option?

You want to take some better pics of your dogs so you're thinking of getting a 7D and 70-200L?! :bonk:
The 40D is perfectly capable of what you want to do, but megazoom lenses aren't the fastest with focusing. If you can afford the Canon 70-200L IS f/2.8 then its a fantastic lens and focuses much faster than the Sigma, so that would be the best option.

Hi thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I take both my dogs and my camera everywhere I go!! So the f2.8 for everyday use is too big and heavy hence the options I started with. I also am not sure how much use the IS will be in this particularly situation???

IS not much use at all for this scenario. However 2.8 is. Faster focusing. Consider a 70-200 2.8 non IS. You'll be advised that Canon L is the best, but lots of folk are more than happy with Siggy. As previously posted the 40D is very capable.
