If anyone has seen my post about buying MFT Panasonic100-400mm lens and the search for one. I failed to mention something so obvious I nearly over looked it.
This would apply to all used makes and lens size. A lot of adverts show a lens side . I have to ask if they do this to hide any dust behind the front or rear glass? This stopped me going further into lens details straight away. It cost no more to add a couple of photos giving these views,so why don't they do it. A lot are also "stock photo" lens copies I also avoided.

Something just to watch out for

I suppose it depends where you are looking to buy from because AFAIK at MPB they show a range over views of the actual lens.

As do WEX.

Wex also state that "the optics show dust throughout which will have no effect on the resultant image".

Or something like that.

I take this as meaning "you can't return for a refund for dust in the lens".

I think you need to look again, They only show them at a distance , at least the Panasonic ones I was interested in. No close up of the glass for inspection. just saying is not the same as seeing which is why I rejected any offers from them

link
if you examine their individual closeups they don't actually show the glass full on. something I think they could improve on

compare that with the one I bought and see the difference

Below I can zoom right in for a closer look and really examine the glass

For me buying an expensive bit of photographic kit I want to see everything first then read about conditions, then in my price range. This is why it took me so long to find what I was after.

Dust is likely the least of your worries with used lens. It normally never shows up. Mistreatment (dropped, moisture, mould) always does as factory misalignment. There are a lot of seriously defective used lenses, and while it improves for new stock it is far from perfect

thank you for you comment and noted

May be so re dust, but the amount behind the glass does matter. In my initial post dust was the first mentioned. condition was second and price third.
No way would I buy a lens with a heavy coating of dust behind the glass which is why a close visual check helps. Check out the example of the one I bought

I stand corrected re MPB, I thought I recalled greater details were 'there'.

Easy mistake to make BB. One needs to double check when buying on the interweb . That is why it took me a long time to find what I was after. Pity MPB don't show lens glass the same way as in the one I got. Being able to do a detailed visual inspection on the interweb goes a long way to selling or being overlooked. Opps my business owners brain working overtime sorry
