Any reason to buy genuine Canon or Sigma lens hoods? Or would some cheap bit of plastic off fl-eBay do the job just as well?

Am looking at them for Sigma 24-70 and Canon 70-300 IS

The Sigma comes with a hood, and the cheapy ones from fleabay dont have the felted insides, but should work just as well.

makes very little difference if any - jsut as long as they are the right hood for the focal lengths.

In my experience genuine Canon lens hoods are pretty cheap bits of plastic anyway. (Except for the hoods on big lenses like the 300/2.8 of course.)

Canon officially licence a company called Marumi to manufacture compatible hoods, and they seem to me to be made of better quality plastic.

But I would imagine that an even cheaper bit of plastic from eBay would probably do the job, so long as it's the right size and shape.

I'll let you know - I've ordered an Ebay one for my 70-200 VR to save me messing up the Nikon one as they are a tad expensive:bang:

What? My Sigma didn't come with a hood! I got one one the 10-20, but not the 24-70 :(

Have I been connned!

JESSOPS!

If the hoode fits, wear it.;)

not sure but im sure the 24-70 is meant ot have a hood! - go back to jessops and say you have only realised by talking to other people and they will probably give you a third party unit for your trouble.

indeed they are linky

Thanks people, I shall pop in after work!

So basically, any hood that fits, will be fine for the Canon 70-300?

I went to University with the guy who owns that site. He's doing a PhD at the University of Kent :)
