I think I know what you are asking but just to be sure, where you say closer to your subject, do you mean standing in the same position which would mean a telephoto or short telephoto? Do you mean moving yourself closer to your subject which would mean a wider angled lens, or getting closer to your subject and filling the frame which would indicate a 'macro' type lens.
Perhaps if you give a little more detail as to what you are photographing and what you are trying to achieve, plus of course that all important question, budget (not breaking the bank could mean different things to different people)

You say you want to get closer to the subject - do you mean something which focuses closer when you fill the frame with a small object (i.e. a macro type lens); or something you can get closer to the action but have a wider field of view?
You don't say what camera in your post - but your profile says Canon 600d.
For the former: a macro lens such as Canon's 60mm f/2.8 looks to be around £200 second hand or perhaps a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro.
For the latter: a 35mm or even 28mm lens.

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens assuming it is canon.
There is good reason 23mm is used as a fixed prime on the x100 line. It is one of the best lengths on a aps-c camera full stop

If so, a 24 or 35mm and move closer. Another option is the 85mm f1.8 which can be had relatively cheaply 2nd hand, and it obviously gets you in closer. When I was shooting Canon crop, the 85 f1.8 was my go to portrait lens.

Apologies but I do think more information, what is it you want to photograph? you can move closer with any lens.
Using a wide angle to move in closer will result in a more exaggerated perspective (perspective is a function of distance). A wide angle is often used to take in a wider angle of view...
You do need to be clearer as to your intended subject and what you are trying to achieve. For example;
"I have a 50mm f1.8 that I love, but I have been seeing these butterflies about on my travels, I want to get closer to them and get nice close ups, what sort of lens would you suggest?"
Like I said - intended subject and what would you like to achieve...

This is 23mm at 2.8.
Just put you and your fish where the wood sign is and it should give you a good idea I hope
