I had that lens on a Nikon FE film camera and it was very good, excellent saturation and contrast. I bought mine second-hand in mid '80s so assuming it's the same one it'll be manual focus.
If I can remember where it is I'll see what it says about fittings.

thanks for the reply , is this of any use now in todays digi age ?

Mine is serial number 801622 and although I know it is Nikon fit nowhere does it say so, unfortunately.

The connector on the back of yours has me stumped though, mine is identical back to where the rear red dot is, but I don't recognise your fitting. I don't think Sigma did an "adaptall" type adapter so unless your dad can tell you what camera it's from I don't think you can do a lot with it to be honest. (might be worth checking if the back bit does come off in case anyone has put some sort of converter on, if they have this site might show what type of mount it is; http://members.tripod.com/rick_oleson/index-99.html )

ps the green "T" is greek letter "gamma"

Sorry I can't help more.

Sorry, you posted while I was typing;)

I believe it was one of the first affordable wide zooms and there is a market for good manual focus lens so I'd expect it to be worth something if you can find out what the rear mount is.

It does look as if the fitting is an adaptor, the only fitting I know of that has 3 contacts is the Practika b.
Might be worthwile trying to see if the mount will unscrew.

thanks guys appreciate your replies , the old man wont know what it is he found it after he cleared a friend of his house after he had passed away , knowing i was getting into photography he picked it up and gave it to me .
ill see if the back comes away , ill keep you posted

yes it did unscrew, and when off there is just a small spring loaded prong on the top of the thread , maybe a contact of some sort

That's an M42 screw mount lens :) The adapter on the back is an Praktica PB -> M42 adapter.

The pin at the back of the screw mount should close the aperture when you push it in. A zoom lens this wide (remember this is 22mm for a full frame camera) would have been very expensive in its day and is probably worth a bit still to collecters and weirdos like me who love trying these old lenses on their Canon / Sony / Olympus / Panasonic / Pentax DSLRs :)

thank you yes it does that when pressed, is this something i can use with a nikon adapter or is it purely for old cameras

You can use this with an adaptor on your Nikon, fully manual, probably have to use stop down metering.
