Having lost the petal hoods for both my lenses and am thinking of buying replacements. I notice there are rubber hoods.

Are there specific uses for each? What are the pros and cons of having either?

And if anyone's got tips for not losing them and caps I'd be very grateful

Thanks
Sue

i would get a designated hood for the lens! the rubber ones are genrally one size fits all for that filter thread size!
dont want to lose them? keep them on the lens, when in use and reversed when not, i have lost one yet doing it this way!

uy the correct hood for the lens - then attach it firmly with electrical tape - and keep it on! Most of my lenses have their hoods taped on - never lost one since I did that :)

When I bought me Nikon D3100 I was sold a rubber screw in lens hood. It was very shallow but still caused vignetting. I returned it to the shop and ordered the one recommended by Nikon. It can be reversed for storage as stated by others. No problem with this one, and it didn't break the bank.:bonk:

Thing is some of the hoods are quite large, I think using my CPL filter with my 17-55 2.8 IS hood is going to be a bit tricky. Or should you not use a hood when using a CPL?!

Sorry to hijack.

Take advice from the lens manufacturer. In my case Nikon were extremely helpful, and assured me that their recommendation would do the job, and it is perfect.

Not sure I follow sorry?

Have a look on line for an e mail address for the manufacturer of the lens, and ask them for the spec for a suitable lens hood, and where to buy it from locally.
