I'm in need of a Lens hood for my 15-85mm. The official one is the EW-78E but I cant quite believe they are looking for at least £30 for this!? Its a bit of plastic at the end of the day, regardless of the fact that its going on a £500 lens.

Anyone else think that hoods are a rip-off or is it just me? I'm tempted to look at the Ebay options at that price.

Welcome to the world of rip offs. From the extortionate price for a DSLR camera battery to the £1K+ for a piece of plastic and glass. Spend your money wisely, fast women and fast cars. :bonk:
 
Think yourself lucky a new hood for my EF 300mm 2.8is USM was just under £400, when a young footballer fell on it at a under 12's final !

Look on ebay, most probably you'll find an exact replica for under a fiver from China.
 
I did look at at various solutions ie. commercial ducting pipe, gaffer tape & plastic sheeting, Velcro but luckily for me e-bay came to the rescue at the 9th hour @£175 delivered inc extra hood/cap, just have to get a replacement tripod collar now to rectify damage, amazingly lens & camera were 100% undamaged...

I searched E-bay for weeks then a "fake" carbon fiber one came up for £199,

withing days a Mint S/H genuine one was obtained Buy it Now !

Try and find a 2nd hand one on ebay that might be cheaper.

I actually got the real one for this lens...

The ebay ones are cheap black plastic inside and out..

The Canon one is nicer plastic and has a flocked inside...

Is it worth 30 notes? Hmmmm.....
 
plastic's plastic. At the end of the day the only role of a hood is to block stray rays of light. I don't think non-OEM copy hoods are really going to fail at that task. Maybe they won't last as long, or could crack if dropped. Buy genuine if you're a pro, or be happy with a copy - I am :)

I've got genuine ones mostly because of the flocking. I'm always surprised firms like Marumi seem to think they can sell lens hood copies for little less than Canon wants. If I'm going to be ripped off I'll buy a genuine one.

Hi Rob

If you do go down the 3rd party route, I would rec a good quality one that has at least a matt interior, some of the better quality ones are flock lined like the original Canon ones, otherwise you could suffer with light reflections inside the hood.

I had a 3rd party one years ago for one of my daughters lenses, nothing at all wrong with it and was very pleased with it, until I compared it to the Canon original hood and there was a diff in quality and the Canon hood also felt much more secure when putting into place - needless to say, I bought a genuine one.
