Lens Hoods ... Enlighten Me please

I use lens hoods on all my lenses all the time but more so for protection rather than to reduce flare.
 
On a similar, but slightly different vein.
The hood for my 70-200 is getting a tad loose and wobbly (read wear and tear on the plastic knobbly things), anyone know of any tips / ways to prolong the life of this bit of plastic?
 
Sorry for bringing an old thread back from the dead but I have a couple of questions on the subject.

I am going to get a couple of hoods for my lenses and was wondering which ones to go for, especially for my 18-55mm kit lens.

I can't find a hood specifically suited for the kit lens and was wondering if one for a similar focal length would do? I was wondering maybe to go for one that starts at the 24mm end (due to the crop)?

Also would it be better to get a petal shaped one for my 75-300mm or just go for the official canon one?

Theres a nifty website somewhere which details interchangeablity - just looking..........
 
OK - bit of a list.......

Key things to remember are the size. For example, an ET 60 will be interchaneable with an EW 60, but W means wideangle so the T (telephoto) is likely to cause vignetting on the wideangle lens.

Check your ebay source mate. The W's tend to have the petal shape so as not to infringe on the image circle from the vertical edges. They are designed to block most of the light from the top and bottom.

The T's tend to be ring design as the agle of view is mush narrower and therefore the image circle is not affected. See pics below:

I still can't work out how both can be the same hood though, and why the majority of them are rings.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm also confused by lens hoods.

From the link above I understand that they aren't really needed on prime lenses, so I don't need to worry about that. I also know that for my 17-40 f4L I should get a the one for the 17-55mm lens as the official one won't be much use on a cropped sensor.

The confusion starts as I am looking at 70-200mm lenses, the f4 has a ring hood (is that what you call the non petal ones?) and the f2.8 has a petal type hood. I've read that petal type hoods asre better, but what is the benefit? (Other than petal hoods looking a lot better?) And why do Canon have different hood types for lenses of the same focal length?

Why not? If you didn't need them for prime lenses no-one would make them. Primes may suffer less from flare than zooms, but a lens hood is still a worth while addition to your kit bag. If you're using any of the larger faster primes then I'd make that essential, as soon as my 200mm f:2 is on my camera I stick the lens hood on, if only so I can put the bloomin' thing down safely!

Yes, for all the reasons mentioned above:
- whilst primes don't suffer from flare as much as zooms, they're not immune
- a hood can take the impact if you drop a lens
- a hood can help stop you touching the front element
- a hood makes you look more professional.

I have one for my 50mm f/1.4. When not in use it reverses and fits over the lens, so it takes up no space.

Does it matter between petal and a round hood? I know the official Canon hood is round, but I'd prefer a petal one, purely for the fact the look cooler :geek:
 
I use the one supplied with my 70-200 2.8 IS, it has a filter but double protection is a must on such an investment!!
