I use lens hoods on all my lenses all the time but more so for protection rather than to reduce flare.
Sorry for bringing an old thread back from the dead but I have a couple of questions on the subject.
I am going to get a couple of hoods for my lenses and was wondering which ones to go for, especially for my 18-55mm kit lens.
I can't find a hood specifically suited for the kit lens and was wondering if one for a similar focal length would do? I was wondering maybe to go for one that starts at the 24mm end (due to the crop)?
Also would it be better to get a petal shaped one for my 75-300mm or just go for the official canon one?
Thanks
Ok so the two I am looking to get are
ET-64 II ET 64 for EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6 USM IS
And
EW-60C EW 60C for EF28-80mm f3.5-5.6/2, U/4, U/5, EF28-90 f4.0-5.6 II, U/2, EF-S18-55mm f3.5-5.6
From looking on the bay though the EW-60C is a ring not petal design, would it be better to go with a petal design (which I read are better) or stick with the official one?
Thanks.![]()

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm also confused by lens hoods.
From the link above I understand that they aren't really needed on prime lenses, so I don't need to worry about that.
Yes, for all the reasons mentioned above:This is the link I was referring to --> http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/lens-flare.htm
The only prime in my bag is th 50mm f1.4. Should I be looking into getting a lens for this?
