I am still learning also but from my experience they are both plastic & do the same job.
The canon item is better plastic & fits that little bit better but worth the extra money .
I have removed all the original hoods from my L glass & fitted cheap Chinese copies.
I even got some sticky back felt & lined the inside of the hoods :)

thanks for the replys guys.its a 1.8 50mm i was going to get a filter to protect the lens

If you were thinking of a filter for protection then maybe a uv filter but even then the front element is quite recessed (if im not mistaken) so not entirely neccesary.

Btw i use the same lens.

I had an ebay hood for my 50 1.8 which cost around a fiver and it worked a treat. No problems from flare or similar and it saved my 50 from possible damage when the cat sat on my bag.

I spent a good few hundred pounds on good quality UV filters for all of my lenses and they seemed to work alright with my 550D, but when I got a 7D most of the shots were soft and some were completely unusable. When I shot one day without the UV filter on a Canon 100-400 L the difference in IQ was amazing. I removed the UV filters from all my lenses and made sure I kept the hood on for protection instead.

The only time I use UV filters now is if it's very wet or dusty where I'm shooting, conversely the only lens I shoot without a hood on is my Canon 100 L macro as I usually have a ringflash attached.

Hi

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a filter.

Normally I opt for the genuine Canon hoods, but have had / got the odd 3rd party hood. I would check that the inside of the hood is a matt finish (a lot of the genuine ones are flock lined) so you don't get any unwanted reflection from inside the hood.

Jessops do a retractable rubber lens hood
I have one and it seems ok took knocks and unlike a solid one it bounces without snapping

thanks for the help chaps ive bought one that modchild sent me a link for

thanks
