Is there anything fancy to look out for about Lens Hood or will this one do the job as good as any other?

It doesn't tell you the range of focal lengths it's designed for; the fitting looks "different"; and there's nothing about it having filter threads.

It looks OK for 28 or 24mm at the wide end, so would be less than ideal when using a long lens with the sun low and at your side.

Ok so there is alot more to its just a lens hood than I thought lol, so......

Recommend me a lens hood which has ability for filters, is 67mm for my main lens which I use 70-300mm also will my lens cap fit on??

Cheapest option: http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/ -- if nothing else, it'll let you see the dimensions you need, for similar lenses.

I've got a Tamron Adaptall-2 70-210mm which has the hood attached to the focus collar which extends when zooming and focusing further away, so the depth of the circular hood is about 20mm deep at the short and close-focus end and 70mm when fully extended. My 60-300mm (also Tamron Adaptall-2) is a plain circular hood, about 50mm deep.

If you set up an email alert and wait long enough you should be able to pick up the genuine article from eBay. In the meantime you could get a rubber or metal circular type. The rubber ones fold back and should be OK for the lens cap as well as having filter threads.

You can also get sections of hood to fit on a Cokin-P (or copy) filter holder. Three or four sections should be enough, plus you can get a slide-in lens protector. It makes a bulky setup, but is a good idea if it makes you more likely to use filters.

My advice is to get the Nikon own one. It's called the HB-36 and is the one designed to fit on the end. It wont fall apart like paper, and will accept filters as it attaches to the outer side of the objective lens housing, whereas the filters screw into the inner side of the housing.

One minute on the Nikon website and then froogle (as ebay don't have any that I could find) got me this...

Cheers Woodsy!! Ordered that one straight away ;) your fault i'm spending more money

GavSt: that type is OK though less effective than a petal-hood at the wide end. Also, when folded back for the wide end it doesn't take much to make it spring into standard mode and cause vignetting (dark corners) with perhaps 35mm or wider focal length.

They are longer than most rubber hoods, so well worth having for longer lenses.

You should think about getting one to fit the largest diameter lens you are likely to own (82mm or 77mm) and use with step up rings on your other lenses. This can help avoid any vignetting on your wide angle lenses, as well as saving you having to get several hoods (though the step up rings aren't much cheaper).
