I have a 50mm lens and was wondering what size lens hood to get have looked on amazon and only go from 52mm I know it seems a stupid question but bear in mind I'm welsh lol
Hi The size of the lens hood is dictated be filter thread size if screw on hood. Not the focal lenth of the lens. If it is a bayonet fit. It is dictated by the make of camera and the max apature of the lens. Extream wide angle lens will probably need a petel shaped hood.
Bit like sheep see ... there's different breeds, Nikon, Sigma, Canon ... and they don't all have the same type of wool fitting. Find the right type for your lens
You could try finding your exact lens model on Amazon and then it should provide a link to a compatible lens hood, normally in the buy these 3 items for £*** section.
A cheapie rubber hood will be fine on a 50mm lens, although a solid hood will provide better protection. I almost always prefer the manufacturers official hood.
On wider focal lengths generic hoods may vignette, and on longer focal lengths they may not provide the best shading of the front element.
Get the lens hood compatible with the lens you have, be that the manufacturers own or a cheap copy. Just because you can buy a lens hood with a certain filter size doesn't mean it will work how it should. It may be there for protection, but it may not be stopping any flaring.

If its the canon 50mm F1.8 then the hood screws into the filter holder on the front of the lens - think its the ES-62 with adapter you need. The choice is whether to go genuine Canon or 3rd party ,,,
If its another 50mm lens, as has been said, look on the manufacturers web site and see which is the lend hood you need, then do a search to find price and genuine / 3rd party...
