Lens Hood Surprise

When I'm out snapping runners, it often rains more than I'd like it to. My 35mm's lens hood is small and of no use when it's raining in the "wrong" direction. The hood on the 85mm is pretty good. Imagine my surprise when I looked through my collection to see if there was anything that would fit my Nikon 50mm. Picked up a hood from a super Takumar 85mm-210mm zoom. It screwed in perfectly. The glass is around 6-7 cm back from the edge of the hood. Must cause vignetting. NO! This'll be great for those rough, stormy days on the fells.

Lens hoods are a neccesary evil (that might be a bit strong but you know what I mean), they seemed to take more room up in my camera bag than the lenses themselves did. Then I thought, all my Canon lenses are the same diameter and I managed to find one hood from them that fitted them all, so now, I only carry the one hood for landscapes. The room it's freed up in my bag is significant, no more squeezing the zips closed. I get a vignette on my widest lens, nothing drastic, just a darkening of the corners and an easy fix in LR.

The deeper hoods will keep the front element dry in most cases.

Sounds like you've saved a few pennies there too. (y)
