Ok possibly contender for 'dumbest post 2011'......

I recently bought a 3rd party lens hood EW83J type for my Canon 17-55 2.8 IS lens, fits nicely......but how on earth do I get it off?!?

Once attached it rotates into one of 2 positions but doesnt seem to want to come off? Has some small clips of somesort but I cannot seem to do anything with them other than chip my nails.

Ermm.....help!

If all else fails I'd be tempted to make two saw cuts in it 180deg apart from the front edge toward the lens. Cut as near to the lens as possible without cutting the lens. Get someone to hold a Hoover hose near it to catch as much of the dust as possible. Use a small saw such as a junior hacksaw. Once you have done this, you should be able to snap the hood.

Another thought - hoods for this length of lens are usually fairly small. Could you leave it in place or is it reversed?

It's quite a large hood, much larger than the Sigma hood I had on my old 17-70mm.

This is not my photo but its the same hood.

Give it some rough treatment, that always gets em off:coat:

Seriously? I don't want to damage the lens, so it twists off then? (anyone else got a 17-55 2,8 IS with a hood to confirm this?

I have a 17-55mm with Hood albeit the Canon one, just twists off anti clockwise, the red mark on the hood aligns with the red mark on the lens in the open position (assuming the third party hood has this mark)

I'm confused sorry...have you not tried to remove it by twisting or rotating it in the opposite direction to the one it went on or are you saying that you've tried it and it won't budge?

Just leave it on! I have mine taped on as they sometimes come off too easily and you lose the bl**dy things.

I've twisted both ways, with a fair bit of effort and it seems stuck. It has 2 clips inside, will maybe try with a knife. Does the Canon have these clips?

The one on my 18-55 has 3 clips which fit the external ring from the outside (original hood), I also tried a 3rd party ebay hood and that screwed into the thread at the front but it gave vignetting at 18mm, wouldnt risk taking a knife to it anywhere near the lens tbh.

Nope no knife!!!! Remove the lens and leave it in the sun and try again. Just don't point it at the sun with the lens cap off whilst attached to the camera as you could end up melting the mirror box.
Sounds like the bayonet hasnt been fitted correctly before being forced on by turning the hood.
Regards
