Silly question but, should the 'long' petals be at the top and bottom or is it a case of adjusting them to suite the angle of the sun?

If I screw mine up tight (ish) They are always at odd angles anyway.

Told you it was a silly question.

So that looks like long petals top and bottom. Trouble is I cannot achieve that unless I leave the hood loose.
There is a floating ring with the hood which looks like it should tighten up to secure it in place. Can't seem to make that work though.

There's your answer then :)

Reason I asked if the lens rotated when you focus, was simple if you think about it :)

Thanks Dave. I appreciate why you asked. But I still have a problem. The lens is a Nikon 18-55 with the correct hood.

Sounds like it's not the correct one.

The AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX?

Optional HB-33 hood

....

The barrel doesn't rotate during zoom, but does during focusing, which means that you will need to readjust polarizing and graduated ND filters.

The HB-33 is a circular hood, not a petal one

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog...b33-hb33-lens-hood-for-nikon-1855-afs-dx-lens

which would be appropriate for a lens with a rotating front element.

e2a: The MkII version takes the HB-45 hood, which is also circular, not a petal design.

Nor am I :)

Seems the kit lens with the D5000 is the VR version, but it still has a rotating front element and takes the same HB-45 circular hood.

I am 99% sure this explains your difficulty with a petal hood. Which one is it? Can you take it back if it was mis-sold?

Hi William,

The other posters are quite right, the hood you should be using with the 18-55mm VR is the HB-45.

I ordered one from China and forgot about it-it took over a month. It arrived after I bought my 18-200mm so can't tell you how much use it is but can confirm its the correct hood to be using.

Not even sure where mine is now I think about it.

Petal hoods are bayonet fit, not screw, and only go on one way. You can't use them if the front of the lens rotates.

If you look through it from the lens side, it will appear rectangular, to match the shape of the image frame.

The shape of the petals on the hood are to accomodate the shape of your sensor. The larger petals should be adjacent the long sides of the sensor and remain there whatever the lens is up to.

If the camera is put in landscape orientation on a horizontal surface the large petals should be top and bottom.

Thanks very much everyone for your thoughts. I now think you are right about it being the wrong hood. However I think it was the one supplied with the lens, mind, with my memory I could be wrong!

HoppyUK. This petal hood I have is definitely a screw on, not bayonet.

Anyway, looks like a new hood is required. Thanks again.

No hood is provided in the D5000 18-55mm kit hence why I went and got one. I actually found it today but not used to cant give an opinion on it.

yeah when dealing with second hand cameras i've seen quite a few.. things like this on ebay

which simply screw into the front and wizz around when you focus.. anything to get the pennies.

"Crown shaped lens hood allows wider shooting angle than the round hood..."
"Enables you to shoot while facing the light source..."

the mind boggles

Charlatan, you are absolutely correct. I have cast my creaking mind back and I think I bought this petal hood a while ago and never used it. Hence I have just found the problem. :bonk:

HB45 here I come.

Thanks for all the replies.

Sounds like you have one of the eBay specials. Saw a lad shooting with a d40 +kit lens and was asking me if I shot wider so I could crop the hood out of the pictures

Have a look around and see if you can find the bayonet fitment circular one mentioned above, means it will clip on and off, save the thread on the front of the lens and mean you can fit a uv to protect your glass

Thanks. I have already ordered an HB45. Strangely enough the UV filter still fitted OK with the rogue lens hood.

No worries, sure you'll be happy when you get your new hood

Enjoy

Moral is, I suppose, you get what you pay for!
