Hi,

I've just taken delivery of my Sigma 10-20mm and my 77mm Hoya Pro1 Filters (UV and CPL).

So far, so good. But....it's a real pain trying to rotate the CPL with the Lens Hood attached as there is no "cut out" as there is on the Pentax Lens Hoods.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy aftermarket Lens hoods that will fit? Or does each Lens Manufacturer have a unique fitting?

It may not be deep but it is virtually impossible to rotate the polariser with it on without smudging fingers all over the glass.
After spending about £350 on Lens and Filters I'm sure a few more quid to get the best from it will not hurt...
 
I think a fair few people have raised this point lately..the more I read it the more I think that a quick and simple solution would be to use a rotary drill on the hood to make a hole....with the different tools available for these a nice finish would be easy....

Maybe a last resort though....O and please remove it from the camera before taking the drill to it:lol::bonk:
 
I may just do that.....looks like the material it's made from may be brittle, I'll have a good look.

I was just seeing if there was an alternative before either a) leaving the hood off, or b) modifying the hood.

Doesn't look like there is so I will choose one of the above options.

I find the lens caps on this lens quite annoying, I have no other Sigma lens so have no idea if this scales through other Sigma lens.
But i did have one for my old Oly E500 but never had the problems like this 10-20.
 
Why are you using a CPL on such a wide angle? I was under the impression that because of its extreme "wideness" you'll see a noticable difference in the CPL effect across the frame especially in skys and that tends to spoil the picture. Am I missing something :shrug:
 
I have two Sigma lenses, I removed both lens caps and replaced them with centre pinch ones as the originals are a right royal PITA to attach with the hoods on.

10-20 and a 105 macro.

Which centre pinch caps did you get? I wouldn't mind replacing mine.

You do, but how noticeable this is varies according to the angle of the sun. They're still useful to an extent, especially when photographing water.
 
If anyone can actually confirm that the lens hood makes the slightest bit of difference on this lens, I'll send them a free toffee apple.
 
Thanks for the replies...I may try a few "comparison" shots with and without the hood. If I cannot notice any visible difference then I shall just leave it off, if I do notice a difference I'll have a look at one of those Rubber hoods mentioned.

to be honest before i sold mine I never used the hood on it...never found that I needed it (especially as I had an ND filter on it most of the time)
 
Same here.... most of my wide landscape shots had the COkin P holder on the front for a polariser or ND filter or both so no hood.
