A dear friend has the 18-55 kit lens, she's got a hood off fleabay that screws into the filter thread but she can never get it the right way around (and I think it's too long) and it's cutting off the corners of her pics, not helped by the fact it rotates with focusing.
Does anybody make a proper lens hood for this, I tried my local camera shop but he doesn't stock Canon (apparently they only allow certain dealers) and he thought Canon dont make a hood for it, but there seems to be some sort of fillting on the lens that look like its for a hood.
I've ordered another one of the crappy screw on ones which I'm going to cut down but there must be a better answer.

there's plenty of generic EW-63 hoods on fleabay as well - and they look to be bayonet fit...

generally don't come "flocked" on the inside of the hood though - i bought an A3 sheet of black self adhesive felt for a couple of quid, which let me line something like half a dozen or more hoods, and i've still loads left

I have one of the ebay versions, its a very short dumpty one and uses the bayonet fitting. Does the job. Your friends screw on one sounds like a one size fits all.

It is, it's a screw in the filter thread and prey! Trouble is I think it's too long anyway, you get a bit hint of vignetting in the corners, worse if it's not ajusted perfectly which is a pain and the filter revolves with focus (and she can never remember which side goes where :))
Thanks for the replies everybody.
