Hi,

I am new to this forum and also DSLRs. I have just bought a 450D and very pleased with it. I'll post some pictures when I have sorted out processing my RAW images!

I was wondering what people's thoughts are on a lens hood for the kit lens, the 18-55mm IS that comes with the camera. Is it worth getting one, and if so, what would people recommend?

Many thanks
CC

Personally I would wait.
You probably will soon find (like many of use have) that the kit lens wont be the only lens you buy.
It's not a bad lens but at 55m it's quite restrictive for a longer range.
Get use to the camera first then think about hoods with newer lenses when you decide to upgrade.

I'd just buy one personally, it'll help reduce lens flare and un-wanted light entering the lens, and it'll also protect the end of your lens from knocks and bumps.

You can get them on ebay for a few quid, so it's hardly breaking the bank if you do end up swapping the kit lens for something better.

I've just bought a petal one (flower shaped edges, i've got a bit of a fetish for them) for my 18-55 IS off ebay for about £4.50 delivered.

Never used one on the kit lens I had on my 300D (yes that long ago), but I did fit a UV filter for what it was worth, since I didnt drop it. Never had a problem with lens flare either.

I'd save your money for whatever you buy next.

Try a Chinese knock-off from eBay. It is reasonable in price and the one I have for my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens fits and works as well as the OEM shade.
