Yes
I am going to a friends wedding next weekend and I was looking at hiring a lens or lenses.

I have a Nikon D50 and I was thinking of hiring the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED.

A good choice or would you suggest something different?

That's a crop sensor body right?

I'm not too familiar with the Nikon lineup, but if I was using a crop body Canon and wanted a lens for a wedding, general use, I'd go for a 17-55 f2.8 IS/USM. I'm sure Nikon have an equivalent to this?

Reason being 24mm isn't very wide on a crop, and you may like that versatility. Then again, 55mm isn't as long as 70, so the extra on the long end may benefit you more.

What lenses do you currently have and what sort of shots are you looking to capture?

Personally I love the 'reportage' shots so I'd go for something like 70-200 2.8 but that wouldn't be much use in a tight space.

I have the.....

Nikon 55-200MM F/4-5.6 AF-S VR

Nikon AFS DX Nikkor 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G VR

Hmmm, maybe a prime then, something a little different for you to have a play with. The 35mm 1.4/1.8, 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 are all worth a look.

I hired a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 for a wedding and used it on a crop body. I found the flexibility of the zoom useful, so I'd go for the Nikon equivalent.

On the other hand if lighting will be bad and you don't have a flashgun it may be worth going for a prime.

I think I have decided on the....

Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR

And........

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED

I would go for the 35/1.8 - and at its price you may be able to afford to buy one for keeps rather than just paying to rent !
