There is an event that I would like to try some new lenses on.
I have 400D with kit lenses, and I want new lenses but I cant really afford it right now so I was going to rent.
Thinking about it though would I be better at buying second hand and then selling on again?
The only pitfall I can see with this is me not wanting to sell again  :nono:

Im looking at 17-40 and or 70-200 L's if it makes any difference.

Buy and sell is cheaper.

Renting can cost like £70 after posting it back if you need it a week.

You will not lost £70 for a £200 lens, and even a £1k lens i don't expect you to lose that much after a week's ownership, not even a month. But then you think how much it costs to hire it for a month!

im looking at the same

really want the 100-400mm L canon for a trip to africa

will be there 3 weeks so renting will take a to much money lost

so plan to buy on fleebay that sell if the lens is not used after my retrun

thing to cost on is ebay fees

10.0% of the amount of the winning bid, up to a maximum Final Value Fee of £40.00

It is all down to having the cash to buy.
I have just brought a used 400mm Canon lens for some wildlife and Airshows this month, i will then sell it for around the same as i paid for it to buy a wide angle lens for the Winter.
I wish i can afford to own a lot of good quality lenses but i cant so this way i have the lens i need for a specific time and never loose more than the cost of postage which i think is excellent.

tesco credit card = 12 months interest free, buy for the right money and either pay off the balance monthly or pay the minimum monthly then sell in month 11 and pay off the balance = either free rent or very low cost.

the pitfalls are, it may go faulty, you could drop it, it could get nicked.
