Lens Hire for Le Mans 24 hrs?

I'm a Le Mans regular & always enjoy taking pictures of the cars. I used to have a 70-300mm lens which was OK but now have a 55-200 VR which I used last year. The current lens is much sharper, but clearly could not get me as close to the action. I have bought a 1.4x Teleconverter since last year, but was wondering about hiring something more suitable for getting good shots of the track action from the stands. I'm looking for recommendations from any that have done likewise or would I be just as well off trying with the teleconverter.
The camera is a D40 by the way.

Have you tried Lens For Hire, they have almost all that you may want / need; and in the event they don't have what you want, they do cater to special requests.

i always give the same advice in these le mans threads.. leave your camera at home and enjoy the event instead. Its just not worth the bother trying to get shots at Le Mans especially when there is fun to be had

I went to Le Mans a couple of times back when Jaguar were winning with the V12's

I took a big bag of SLR stuff and the best picture I took in two years was an over the head point and hope shot of the winning Jags crossing the fiish line with a crowd full of Jaguar flags in the foreground.

It was taken on a 35mm compact camera.

That would be my advice, take a compact, concentrate on the atmosphere and the crowd.

If you want photos of the race put "Le Mans 2009" on your book list for Christmas.

totally agree with that. i go every year and theres no point taking pictures as you miss the magical event

The "leave the camera at home" advice is always good for almost any event but in this case the OP did start with this bit....

So, if andy knows what it's all about. I'd say go for a fast 300 and take the converter to get that bit extra.
