Im lookin to replace my kit lens with one of the following

Sigma 17 70 contemporary
Sigma 17 50
Tamron 17 50 non vc

So far i have been drawing to the sigma 17 70 because of the extra reach but as i am shooting with a Nikon d7100 i have been reading about problems Sigma lenes are causing in camera with image scrolling and review times.
Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with this lens on a d7100 or if anyone has any lens suggestions for replacing my kit lens with. I would love the Nikon 24 70 or the Tamron 24 70 but i cant justify spending that kind on money on a lens.

I used sigma 17-70 for years in all different flavours and loved every moment of them!!

I have recently bought the Tamron 17 - 50 non vc and am very happy with the results. You need to make sure you get one which is sharp.

If you have a shop near you give the Sigma a try, don't think they sell the Tamron non vc anymore.

And there you have it, strong support for both. Try to find a dealer with the Sigma and the Tamron in stock and see which you prefer.

Just got the Sigma 17-70 for Christmas (lovely wife) and am really impressed with it. I was also considering the Tamron 17-50 but wanted that little bit of extra reach.

Can anyone give any more opinions on the newer Sigma 17-70 Contemporary 2013 version, or a link to photos taken with it? Some reviews say it's soft at the wide end...

I have the sigma 17-70 love it....

Is that on Canon? I've got a Nikon D7000 and am currently umming and arring over this one. Love my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 but would like slightly longer range for a walkabout lens. Obviously that one has the advantage of f2.8 right through to 50mm where the Sigma minimum of f2.8 only goes to 22mm.

I've used the sigma:
17-70 in both f/4.5 and f/4
17-70 OS
Tamron 17-50 VC
Tamron 17-50 non-VC

On both Canons and Nikons and it comes down to what do you want?

Fixed 2.8? = Tamron Non-VC
OS ? Sigma 17-70 OS
Ultra sharp? = Tamron Non-VC
close focus & cheap ? 17-70 non-OS (you can touch the subject on the lens and it'll still focus!)

For me, the extra reach and the close focus of the sigma's always did it for me. The only thing I ever upgraded these to was the canon 17-55 F/2.8. The tamron I had in canon flavour was actually sharper in the centre than the canon 17-55 but the canon was better into the corners.

To be honest they are all great lenses, with the exception of the tamron VC which has a high number of lemons, so you just need to decide what feature(s) are most important to you :)
