Lens help

You will find 6.3 at 300mm fairly restrictive if you work in anything other than pretty good light.

Have you looked at the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO DG Macro as an option? I used to use one myself and it's a nice lens.

Is the 75-300 lens you mentioned the Canon one? If so, avoid it, it's a poorly made lens with medeocre image quality.

That's a surprise.

I expected the Canon lens to be the best quality.

What make do you recommend?

Edit:

I've been trawling the net looking at the Sigma 70-300 APO. It looks like really good value at £130.

Looks like I might be talking to the missus.

If you want to ask which lens is better, you really need to define "better".

Better image quality?
Better value for money?
Better construction?
Better suited to the kind of photos you want to take?
Etc.

I am a novice and have been told that the lower the number the better the lens.

Therefore the f3.5 is better than the f4, but the f5.6 is better than the f6.3.

I want to use it with a 2x teleconverter to give me a decent wildlife lens.

It's not just the aperture you need to look at. OK a f 3.5 lens lets in a bit more light, 1/3 stop to be exact, but it's the lens itself that controls the overall quality of the image. Therefor a lens with an aperture of f4 may give better image than a f3.5 one

I'm not over keen on lenses with a wide zoom range. It's a lot to ask from the optics to give an 11x magnification at an affordable price and maintain image quality. However it's up to you to judge what lenses are best for you.

The other aspect is converters. I have the Canon 1.4, but use it infrequently. I thought about the 2x but there is some feeling that the 1.4 image cropped gives a better image than the 2x at full frame.

What is your budget? Also what camera are you using? Finally do you really need a zoom, could a prime lens do the trick for you? These can be cheaper and often give better image quality.

For any of the lenses you are considering you'd suffer severely with slow AF using a teleconverter. The Canon TC's won't fit with the Sigma 70-300mm for sure, and I'm pretty sure not with Tamrons or indeed Canons of the same sort of specs. You'd need to look at something like a Kenro (? brand name) converter I think, and even then, in all honesty, you might well find that the IQ isn't really what you'd like.

Thanks for all the advice.

I already have a Jessops 2x teleconverter. It fits ok with my Tamron 55-200mm. It does tend to hunt for focus if it gets confused. ie large areas of unbroken colour etc but seems ok if there is something solid to focus on.

Many years ago I had a Zenith TTL and 400mm fixed lens. I found it almost impossible to capture images of moving subjects, so it was no good for wildlife.

My zoom on the other hand gives me the ability to focus quickly on moving subjects, which is ideal.

The teleconverter offers the hide in the bushes with a tripod type of coverage.
