Hi all,

A bit of a novice here, and still looking to buy my first DSLR camera. I just need a bit of help in Lehman's terms what the numbers mean when it comes to lens description.

For example, what does each element of the following mean in terms of zoom, focus etc?

"DT 18-70mm F3.5-5.6"

Thanks for your help.

OK - the 18-70 mm refers to focal length or amount of zoom.

the F3.5 - 5.6 refers to maximum apperture throughout the zoom. ie the maximum apperture at 18mm will be f3.5 and at 70 mm will be f5.6.

Not sure about the DT - do you mean DX? if so this is Nikon's designation for a lens that is designed only for us with crop sensor bodies

Not sure how helpful that answer actually was

Cheers

Hugh

Thanks for that, all seems to make sense.

I could have actually looked it up myself but I can be a bit impatient sometimes and people on here seem more than willing to help.

So if I was planning on taking close up action shots at a football match for example, then a lens such as 75-300mm would be ideal??

I'd like to point out that "lens" is an obsolete spelling and these days "lens" is sufficient :p

75-300mm will be fine for your purposes.

DT is Sony isn't it, a bit like canons EF ?
