Hi all

I have had my 450D with kit lens (18-55mm) for a while now and am finding the lens very limiting as I take a lot of distance pictures. What would be the best lens for me to get at a budget price? I've been looking at either the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS or the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM.

Which do you think would be best suited?
Would I miss the 55-75mm range if I went for the 75-300mm?

To help you help me a bit better I do a whole range of photography including rugby matches, windmills, radio controlled cars, horses and a whole lot more!

Thanks for your help

As little as possible! don't have a lot at the moment so I'll need to save for whatever I get so the cheaper it is the sooner I get it! I would prefer to spend a bit more to get the right kit though!

I've been in that world for a while now, all my hobbies seem to cost me a small fortune!

The 55-250mm would be the one I would go for as the 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM doesnt get great reviews at all.

As all above.

I had (and still have) similar issues with my 350D.

Got the Sigma 70 - 300 5.6 DG lens and a 2x TC and wasnt that impressed either alone or with the TC.

Saved a bit and got the 55 - 250mm IS and it hasn't come of the body for weeks. Ok so you loose 50mm but the IS provides for good sharp images with its 4 stop compensation.

55-250 is a cracking little lens, and amazingly good for the price. 70-300 IS is the next step up, you you pay a lot more in money, size and weight, for surprisingly little extra optical benefit.

Would agree with the above post, the 55-250 IS lens is a cracker and gets very good reviews. Of the 2 you suggest, I would go for this

Same as Hawkmoon here. Have the Sigma 70-300 but have not used it since getting the 55-250. Much sharper lens on the 40D

I agree that the 55-250 lens would be great. Saying that I used to get some nice shots with my 70-300mm tamron that only cost under £100 at the time....I think the IS would be useful though!
