Morning all

I'm just starting out and putting some kit together and after some advice on what 'general purpose' lens to go for.

The body is a Nikon D80 and the popular choice seem to be :-

DX 18-55
DX 18-70
DX 18-135

Any thoughts / suggestions. I am right in thinking I am going to get more flexibility with the 18-135 ?

+ is it better to go with Nikon or should I consider Tamron, Sigma etc ?

Any help appreciated

What prices are you looking at ? £450 new or about £250-300 secondhand for the VR ?

i found that I had to temper the "what do I want?" Heavily with "what can I afford?" :)

the lenses you select will depend really on what type of pictures you want to take.

Mmmm

I think the 18-70mm DX would suit my needs for now without spending silly money

When will yours be available and enlighten me on the goodies :D

I've got a D80 body coming soon and dont want to be without a lens that I can play with :shake:

The tension mounts, under 10 minutes and counting down....:)

Good on yer.......

Have a look at the Tamron 17-50 2:8. You can pick these up at reasonable prices. Very sharp and 2:8. The one I have is almost as good as the Nikon 17-55 that I have. it's a lot lighter though. The 18-70 is a good lens as well but the Tamron is excellent in low light situations.

The Nikon 18-200 vr has dropped in price now that it is more available. It holds its 2nd hand value very well and is an excellent all round lens.

The 70-300 vr is also an excellent lens with great image quality. These can be had for about £300.00 brand new.

Hope that helps.

Chris :)

Well, I have finally (rightly or wrongly) gone with the following :-

Nikon 18-70mm DX (for general purpose use)

and

Nikon AF 80-200 (cheap solution if I want to go longer)

My thinking is that I have the best of both worlds (close up and distance) for a relatively low cost and I can always chop them in should a 18-200 VR become available in the future.

Look forward to displaying my results either way

Thanks for everyone’s help
