Hi guys, I have a Sony Alpha A290 and a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I used it on Saturday fine, and I put it on my shelf, went out with it today and it won't auto-focus properly :S. It will do at around the 70-100 end but at 100ish-300 it won't autofocus. It'll stay blurred but will still take a picture sometimes :S Any ideas what might be wrong? It's not been dropped or banged or anything

Cheers

Lewis

The gold square things on the lens that connect to pins on the camera body? If so I've just given them a wipe and it's not worked =/

I apologise in advance if you think this is stupid... but it does happen....have you knocked the focus switch on the lens without realising from AF to M ? ....I ahve and scratched my head for ages :)

I wish mate :( nahh macro is off, it's set to AF and I've reset camera to factory settings and started again but still no luck

Going to take it to Jessops this afternoon I think

At the long end of budget zooms the contrast falls off very quickly. Autofocus relies on contrast. It may simply be because there isn't enough light to create the contrast needed to make AF work properly.

I've tried it in all the usual conditions mate it's just not having it. Just noticed that in MF the focus ring moves through 15 - 7 - 4.5 - 3 - 2 and then won't move past to towards 1.5 - 1.3 - 1.2 - 1.1 - 1.0 - 0.95

Yeahh I agree Chris, not good after 9 months is it. It's been well looked after too. I bought one 9 months ago and it didn't work so they replaced it with this and now it's packed up. Jessops will probably charge me more than I paid just to look at it so I think I need to have a shop around

Im not sure Simon, probably not with Jessops but it should have a years manufacturers guarantee?

If you brought it from Jessops new,it should come with a least 12mth g/tee,they made not replace it but should fix it under g/tee :)

Went in to Jessops before Simon, it's been sent off now for repair. She said it'll probably cheaper to replace it than actually pay someone 3 or 4 hours to work on it so either way isn't bad. 6-8 weeks though!!! What'll I do without my big lens :(

Cheers for the response guys

You can alway look postive side, give some of the lens you dont use that much a go.

Hope you get it back soon :)

Afraid that's the price we pay sometimes for the third party lens'. I've got some sigmas that are war war horses, then I've got a tamron that plays loose and fast at it's own amusement. All my nikons the other hand are all rock solid.

But think of it as a challenge and use the zoom that god gave you, your legs, and learn how to stalk your photog prey !
Least it's getting fixed though
