lens help for all round

have just bought canon eos 30d with a tamron 70-300 lens with it
looking to buy a standard lens but new to this so not sure what i require want one for bit of all rounder weddings family pictures

use to have a fuji finepix s9500 but that had fixed lens

i tried taking pictures at this years BSB at cadwell
pictures where not really clear
i was told buy a m8 that does photo's for BSB
he said i was getting shutter lag
so i sold that on ebay
then got the canon

im looking to buy two things a lens and battery grip dont really have alot of money
are the cheaper battery grips ok can anyone tell me
keep looking on ebay at them

paid £270 for my camera lens and fairly big bag

but the lens i have with it seems to powerful for family shots

still would like to learn more about the camera what things do

where to have things set

so really starting from scratch

camera use to have was where you put films in
praktika tl3 with manual lens so all new to me

so if anyone can help mein anyway

If you don't have a lot of money and just starting out then there's actually nothing wrong with getting the kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS) for those more up close shots, you can pick them up from these forums for £50-60. You'll find that outside of those kit lenses prices start to hurt.

Of course the nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8 II) is a cracking lens for the money but as a beginner you may find it limited due its focal range and it's not really ideal for group shots.

If you are a beginner to DSLRs and want to take photos of motorsports you should read up on the AI SERVO focusing mode in the manual.
