Hi, I've just upgraded to a Nikon D300 so have passed my D40x to the missus along with the standard 18-55 Dx lens which has served me well. I have the Sigma 10-20 and 70-200 so just need something to bridge the gap, a general purpose lens with a minimum aperture of f2.8 for the full focal range. Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 Di.

Superb, I've used the lens on a D300 and its razor sharp at all focal lengths and apertures.

For the D300, try to get the older version without the built in motor, as autofocus will be much quicker driven from the camera body.

As andy said, its a cracking lens.

I had the non motor version on my D300 and the results were excellent.

I only swapped to the sigma 17-70 because:

a/ i didnt need the constant f2.8

and

b/ i really needed a little more that the 50mm

ipswichboy - must be near me (i'm in Kesgrave)

I've currently got the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 as a loaner and its very nice indeed... but the owner says to me that I should check out the Tamron as mentioned above as its even more impressive...

I have the Nikkor 17-55 2.8 but if the tamron is as sharp as Andy says,it's half the price,so go for it.

i would agree, i have the 17-55 and its fantastic, but i havent used the tamron, but Andy has alot of experience with alot of lenses, if he says its a good one then it will be a good one
