the lens is G series and it have AF-S so that mean the lens have a internal focus motor to auto focus. So to answer your question it will auto focus on the entry body like D5000, D3000 etc.
The lens is more than capable to do indoor shots but you have to think about what focal length you need etc. If you don't mind walking back and forward to zoom then you will be fine.
