I was looking at either getting the canon 35mm f2 or the canon 50mm f1.4 for general and macro photography.

I'm also very intesested in a nice DOF...

What do you guys think? I've read so many comparisons and reviews about the 2 lenses, but still can't seem to decide!

Double check the close focusing capabilities on the lenses you're looking at. Remember that neither has a very long focal length, and as a result you'll need to get pretty close to your subject to get any kind of results close-up. I used to use the nifty fifty a lot for close work until I got the 100mm macro, it's good, but not a patch on the dedicated macro lens.

Any of these for general macro 1:1 use, put a full set of extension tubes on and you will get 2:1.
Canon EF 100
Sigma 105 EX DG
Tamron SP AF 90
All pretty much of a much picture quality wise and all f2.8

I'm currently selling a canon 100mm macro lens in the members market, go check it out, great portrait lens too :)

I saw the sigma 105 last week and it's seriously good. I have one other sigma lens (12-20) and I like them. I used to just buy Canon L lenses - the truth is I can't tell the difference.
