Hey guys im new to here and infact im new to photography...So Hello !!

Ive just bought a Lumix G2 and i want to add a wide lens to it....It's a micro four thirds so im not sure how much choice i have....Is it possible to buy an addaptor so i have a wider choice ? im not keen on spending £500 -£600 on a lens at this stage more like £250....Would i be better buying 2nd hand or can you recommend one ? I have a 14mm-45mm at the moment !!

Please help and thank you

Ive also heard the 45-200mm is a good all round addition to the camera !!

They come in at £230 so this is within budget but i relise its not a wide lens

The problem is the crop factor on the M43 camera's as it effectively doubles the focal length of lenses, thus your 14-45 is really a 28-90.
Now this is great when you want more reach but lousy when you want to go wide.
Your only real option is to fit a manual focus lens with an adaptor, its either that or shell out nearly a grand on the 7-14mm panasonic lens.

Apart from the samyang 8mm (16mm on yours) I can't really think of anything that will do what you want and come within your price range as most lenses start around 16-18mm with most lens companies.

Adaptor wise you can get them for any brand lens, but you wont retain autofocus and will have to shoot in AV or manual mode.
In fact I have a pentax one and a couple of lenses going cheap in the sales section from when I had a G1

Ian thanks for your reply

What sort of price are you looking for your adaptor and lenses ?

Were you happy with the results when you had your G1 using these lenses ??

Many thanks

Another thing

What benefits will the 45-200mm bring to my camera ? Is this a worthwhile addition to the camera ?

Sorry for all the questions but as I said I'm new to this game and I've got to learn somewhere !!
:bonk:

The cheapest way to get wide angle with AF on the G series is to get the panny DMW-MA1 and use the Olympus 9-18 mm, AF speed can be a bit slow though
Shameless plug time
I have this setup for sale on the forum :)

It will give you longer reach, as for is it a worthwhile addition it really depends on what you want to shoot.

Yes the lenses worked well, sadly my eyesight isnt so good though and I shoot in low light as well as having mobility problems so ruled out the manual route, the lenses where originally used with my old pentax DSLR for astro photography.

The 200mm for instance would give you a 400mm F3.3 !! on your camera.

Ian

can you list the advantages and disadvantages these lenses you have for sale will have on my G2 ??

Hey i have a G1 and have 14-45, 45-200 and pancake lens and all are invaluable to my kit! The 14-45 is a good portrait lens, 45-200 gives better reach but is worthless if you are at a wedding for example as you need to dive in and out. The pancake lens is great as its 20mm but can get more perspective! The lenses are coming down in price and ive recently seen the 20mm for £320 so worth the extra £70 for a great lens! :)

I've just seen the pancake lens in fotosense. For £269.... Will this lens give me wide angle....?? And what kind of photos will this be good for ?

The pancake is a great lens but it's slightly less wide than the widest setting on the 14-45. It is faster, with a maximum aperture of f1.7 - this lets more light in which allows you to shoot blur free shots in lower light, and creates the nice shallow depth of field effect (blurred background).

Wide options that aren't silly money are unfortunately one of the things lacking on M4/3

shameless plug but I have a couple of panasonic lenses in the classifieds.........

Advantages: cheap as chips, good light gathering power ie fast lenses, the crop factor doubles the focal length meaning you have a 270mm F2.8 and 400mm F3.3. Solid build.
Good in low light situations.
Using the adaptors allows you access to numerous relatively cheap but good older lenses.

Disadvantages: not dedicated so need to be used with an adaptor.
As they are metal they weigh more than modern plastic bodied lenses.
Manual focus only.
Will only operate in manual or AV (aperture priority modes) either way you have to set the aperture on the lens or in the case of manual use the camera's light meter to indicate whether or not you have set the right aperture and shutter speed.
You cant really just point and shoot unless in AV mode, even in AV mode you have to point/focus/shoot.

Thats about it really
