I'll be taking my 40D, Tamron f/2.8 17-50 and Canon L f/4 70-200 with me at the weekend.

A friend has offered to loan me his Canon L f/4 300mm and 1.4X converter.

As I've never been before I have no idea of the scale or where to get the best shots.

In short, would I be mad not to take the 300m + 1.4X?

Also, where do I get the best shots?
 
I'm also going for the first time and had the same questions. I'm taking a 300mm which should be good enough, but if space is not an issue then I'd take the 300 with tc.

I'm heading down early Friday morning to catch the 9:15am ferry.

I'm going to take all my lenses plus the 300mm/TC as it would be a shame to miss anything. I'm camping on the grounds of the company who supplied me with a ticket so I'm right in the centre of the circuit :)

Where are you staying?
 
heading down tom too. 8.00am from portsmouth. Armed with a 400 2.8 and pro plus !
 
best advice you will get:
leave all your expensive equipment at home and enjoy yourself instead.
take a cheapo camera and take pics of your mates.
there is nowhere to get good shots at Le Mans and chances are a pikey or chav will nick your equipment

Is it really that bad? Worse than any other track event?

As I'm going with one other person I think people would get the wrong idea if I only had pictures of him :)

LOL.. he'll be flattered :)

its a big circuit but only about 1/3rd can be accessed by the public and those bits are 5-6 people deep for the full 24 hours, and behind big fences.
you can still find bits where you can get some decent pics, but really its just not worth the bother.
If media passes were transferable I'd sell you mine ;)
