Lens for food photography.....

I need want to take some closer up and better images of the stuff in this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=111387 They just want some closer up shots of the food. I don't mind investing a bit because I will obviously be able to use the lens in the future.

All I have at the moment is the D700 and Sigma f/1.4.

Ya but I know nothing about them, which ones are good, bad value for money etc.

considering you own a nikon i would either say a "NIFTY FIFTY" or something like the sigma 105 macro, these are both highly rated

Get a Nikkor 55mm f/.2.8 AI-S macro. These are superb lenses - so good I've got two!

Super cheap, super sharp. A joy to use.

PM glitch he takes Pictures of food and seems to know his stuff with regards to it, but I think he shoots with Canon.

Pretty much what I would have thought of. Working distance is a lot more versatile than 100mm for food and people shots in restaurants.

The 60mm Micro focuses to 1:1 whereas it's 1:2 for the 55mm.

I would have thought more in the focal range of 50mm would be better for food.

The PC-E Micro 85mm is the perfect lens.

PC-E so you can get creative with your angles and maintain perfect depth of field, or do more with it, 85mm is a good focal length and will go to 1:2 reproduction ratio (i.e. an object 72mm x 48mm will fill the sensor.) If you'd rather use a normal lens, there's a 45mm PC-E Micro as well.

Not a cheap lens!

I would have thought the 50 f/1.4 would be perfect, since it is super sharp and will still allow you a small DoF if you want. I'm not fond of macro food photography, you need a bit of plate, cutlery etc around it.

Im not working tonight so going to take my 50mm 1.4 up there and see if I can get close enough

If you really want to make a meal of it coat then have a look at the Nikon PC-E 85mm f/2.8D.....
