Been looking around a bit for a telephoto for my D40, and have found these:

Nikon 55-200mm F4-5.6 G AFS
Nikon 55-200mm F4.5-5.6 AFS DX

That's all they're described as. I'm assuming they'll both fit?
At the moment I'm leaning towards the top one, as it's got the lower aperture.

Which one, oh wise and knowledgeable forum?

They are both the same lens, and both will work. One has a typo in the specifications.

Try to find one with "VR" in the title - its a tremendous little lens, and far better than a £100-£125 lens should be.

VR stands for Vibration Reduction
It stabilises the lens against camera shake when using slower shutter speeds.

VR = Vibration Reduction

It is intended to reduce the effect of camera shake i.e. the very slight movements you make when taking a shot. It enables you to take shots at 3 to 4 stops below what you should be able to do handheld. So for example, at a focal length of 200mm you can go down to a minimum shutter speed of 1/15 or 1/30 sec instead of a minimum of 1/250 sec and still get a picture handheld.

I had the 55-200mm VR, didnt like it!

But at the time I needed something really versatile so I went for the 18-200 VR.

Definitely go for the one with VR though, it'll be very useful.
